The Environmental & Social Responsibility Society of CIM (ESRS)

The Environmental & Social Responsibility Society (ESRS) of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) is a technical community for professionals optimizing environmental and social performance within the mining sector.

The society focuses on the integration of sustainability risk management, governance, and community engagement into core business strategy and site-level operations.

ESRS facilitates technical discourse and knowledge transfer in the following areas:

  • Environmental Performance: Developing protocols for risk mitigation and regulatory compliance
  • Resource Stewardship: Advancing technical standards for water stewardship and tailings management
  • Indigenous Relations: Establishing frameworks for transparent engagement and collaborative community relations
  • ESG Integration: Analyzing ESG frameworks and their impact on global mining regulations
  • Technology Adoption: Evaluating the practical application of sustainable technologies in mining operations

What does ESRS do?

ESRS provides data-driven platforms for technical exchange and professional development:

  • Technical Briefings & Webinars: Regular forums addressing specific operational challenges, including water treatment and tailings risk assessment
  • CIM CONNECT Technical Stream: One of the industry’s primary technical programs dedicated to social and environmental responsibility
  • ESG Guidelines: Leading the development and peer review of industry-standard ESG reporting and governance guidelines

Operational Support & Learning

The society prioritizes the creation of tangible tools for industry practitioners:

  • Implementation Guidance: Developing case studies and frameworks to bridge the gap between corporate strategy and site execution
  • Technical Working Groups: Expert-led groups (e.g., Water Working Group) focused on producing short-form technical content and guidance documents
  • Professional Advocacy: Reinvesting resources into technical depth and the practical adoption of industry best practices

Industry Participation & Growth

ESRS supports the long-term viability of the sector through targeted sponsorship and professional advocacy:

  • Student Sponsorships: Financial support for students to attend CIM CONNECT, fostering the next generation of professionals
  • Indigenous Participation: Annual funding to facilitate Indigenous representation at the CIM Convention
  • Collaborative Governance: Strengthening corporate social responsibility (CSR) through cross-society initiatives and peer-reviewed standards

Spotlight: Julianna Piccolo

Sustainability Analyst, Quadra Group

The supportive network of peers within the ESRS executive committee has been instrumental in my career development. They've introduced me to a valuable network of sustainability and environment professionals, provided mentorship, and fostered a collaborative environment where we can discuss how to educate the mining community on environmental and sustainability topics.
