Job Description

As a Mining Engineer specialising in Mine Backfill you will be responsible for the provision of mine backfill technical & operational support for studies and projects on best practice methods and technologies. As a Mining Engineer specialising in Mine Backfill you are the key point of contact for all study and project related underground backfill scope. Within Anglo American we recognise that optimal backfilling of excavated underground voids is crucial to mine safety and performance and that the best time to ensure the correct methodologies, practices and processes are established is during the study phase. 

Your purpose is to provide value, add technical solutions and support based on strategic and operational analysis of opportunities across the Group’s portfolio. This includes supporting the business units with high value RDP, Studies and integrated Life of Mine Plan solutions and continuous mine modernisation through implementation of new technologies and systems.  This role is an active “hands on” role requiring significant time actively solving problems as well as the identification and co-ordination of consultant scopes.

You will work collaboratively with key business partners throughout Anglo American as well as external contractors to define plans, systems and processes supporting operational excellence in our future underground mines. You will conduct and facilitate work requirements aligned with the Anglo American Investment Development Model (IDM) requirements for all study stages and across multiple commodities. This will involve delivery of specific mining related study scope and/or the management of consultant scope for specific work packages. You will also assist in training and development programs, mentoring and coaching of engineers.
Exposure to backfill software packages will be highly regarded. You will utilise your experience of coal mining backfill processes as well as your knowledge in design to deliver achievable, safe and efficient technical solutions and support. 

Your proactive approach, analytical focus and strong communication skills will see you adding value and operational improvements to our technically and geographically challenging sites. Principal Functions: 
-    Support Studies processes by providing (backfill) inputs as required.
-    Aid in the planning of IDM stage aligned mining work packages with reference to scope, schedule, cost and resourcing.
-    Execute agreed mining backfill related scope aligned with IDM stage requirements and standards utilising relevant software.
-    Manage consultants engaged in the execution of mining backfill scopes of work.
-    Maintain and adhere to planning, scheduling and reporting systems for Study execution. 
-    Support Mining Studies review processes by providing inputs for consolidation and presentation to senior leadership
-    Identify and escalate all risks that might affect successful delivery and mining capability.
-    Identify opportunities to maximise value to Anglo American whilst ensuring safety, health and environmental impacts are considered and not compromised. 
-    Actively pursue new technologies that would cause a breakthrough change to mine backfilling practices

Key Technical outputs: 
-    Demonstrated success in the generation, manipulation and implementation of backfill plans, designs and schedules.
-    Mentoring of project engineers to ensure understanding of and successful uptake of “best practice” backfill methodology
-    Demonstrated thought leadership and considered an accomplished practitioner in mine backfill planning and execution.
-    Demonstrated application of academic qualifications through experience working in the field.

Qualifications

Expertise must have been obtained from a formal qualification in Mining Engineering or other relevant Engineering discipline.

Qualifications such as:
Minimum requirement: Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering 
Desirable: Masters or PhD in relevant discipline.

Required: Ability to communicate in English (advanced level for verbal and written).
Desirable: additional languages, specifically Spanish, are advantageous.

Demonstrated (10+ years) of Operational and Technical experience as a mine backfill practitioner with experience in Cement Aggregate Fill (CAF), Cemented Rockfill (CRF) or Paste backfilling methodologies.

Additional information

This is a Global role with the potential to be based from any of our central business hubs across the world. This role involves regular International travel to South Africa and South America. – (depending on where the candidate is based). A standard Anglo American International relocation package is on offer with this role.
