Sponsored by the CIM DIAC (Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Committee), the Diversity and Inclusion Medal recognizes exceptional contribution towards improving diversity and inclusion within the mining industry in Canada. For clarity, within the concept of this award, the following definition of diversity and inclusion is used:

Diversity is any dimension that can be used to differentiate groups and people from one another including ethnicity, gender, age, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, education and religion

Inclusion puts the concept and practice of diversity into action by creating an environment of involvement, respect, connection and support; allowing the richness of ideas, backgrounds and perspective to be harnessed to create value.

Purpose

The Diversity & Inclusion recognizes the efforts of an individual who through his/her efforts has helped make the mining industry a more diverse and inclusive industry for all.

Criteria

Either a very special initiative and or achievement or consistent achievements over an extended period (at least 3 years)

Other

In order to encourage new entrants to this arena, and thereby expand the number of contributors to diversity and inclusion, preference shall be given to those candidates who have not yet been recognized or received awards related to this area, especially within CIM.  

Recipients

There is only one recipient of this award every year. This award is solely for individual nominations (no teams).

2025

Stacy Kennedy

Stacy Kennedy is a pioneering leader in Manitoba's mining industry. As the first female president of the Mining Association of Manitoba (MAMI), she is a trailblazer. Currently serving as the director of Manitoba operations at Vale Base Metals, Stacy is known for her commitment to operational excellence and inclusivity. She has spearheaded initiatives like the Miners in Training (MinT) Program, which provides hands-on training and mentorship for women and underrepresented individuals in mining. Stacy's commitment to advancing the role of women and Indigenous people in mining is unwavering. Her innovative thinking has driven impactful change, such as her involvement and leadership in the Uncover Prosperity-MB campaign to promote sustainable mining practices and her position on the Premiers Business and Jobs council. As testified by many, as mentor and leader, she has opened doors for others, advocating for female and culturally diverse membership in mine rescue operations, leading to notable successes.

Samantha Espley

Past President of CIM (2020-2021)

Samantha is a mining executive with 37 years of industry experience leading operations, technical services, and as a corporate director with international mining companies: Vale, Inco, Glencore, Noranda, Falconbridge, Denison.  She is a non-executive board member of Paramount Gold Nevada, Northern Graphite Corporation, and Canadian Academy of Engineering, Past President of CIM, and Chair of the CIM Health and Safety Society. She is a senior mining advisor for Stantec leading mining project studies in exploration through to closure phases. She leads cross-sector collaboration to rapidly seek out and implement value-added solutions. The cornerstones of Samantha’s values are respect and dignity.  Samantha is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, a founding director of WISE (Sudbury) and received achievement awards: WIM Trailblazer, Top 100 Global Women in Mining, CIM Distinguished Service, UofT Mid-Career, PEO Engineering Management, Engineers Canada Leadership, and the Governor General’s Gold Medal. She is a CIM Past President.
