The Byron Knelson Memorial Scholarship is a $5,000 annual scholarship for 3rd and 4th year students in a mining engineering discipline with specialization in mineral processing.
Award details
The Byron Knelson Memorial scholarship is awarded annually in the amount of $5,000. The successful recipient is awarded the scholarship at the annual National Canadian Mineral Processor’s Conference in Ottawa. In addition to the $5000, the recipient receives airfare and accommodation to attend the conference in Ottawa.
To be eligible, the candidate must be enrolled in a full time undergraduate degree program at an accredited Canadian University. The award will be open to 3rd and 4th year students in a mining engineering discipline with specialization in mineral processing.
Application process
To apply the candidate must provide the following:
1) A 200-400 word submission outlining what the candidate would like to focus on in their mineral processing career. Special consideration will be given to students that demonstrate an interest in innovation and physical separation.
2) Up to date transcript – this award will only use grades as an indication of background of study and not as a primary selection criteria.
Application Deadline
The Scholarship Review Committee will evaluate applications and notify each applicant of the final decision by December 15. Scholarship funds will be presented to the successful recipient at the National Canadian Mineral Processor’s Conference in Ottawa.

History
Byron Knelson was the inventor of the Knelson concentrator. During his storied career, Byron changed the face of physical separation with his invention. In honour of this great inventor, his business partners Doug Corsan and Brett Knelson started the Byron Knelson Memorial scholarship in an effort to support the next generation of mining professionals in Byron’s name.
