Bobbie Gaucher - 02 April 2026

Advancing safety through insight, innovation and leadership

The ISSA Mining Safety Conference, hosted by CIM and its partners, will bring together global leaders, operators, regulators and researchers to explore how safety is being redefined across our industry. More than a series of presentations, the ISSA technical program offers a comprehensive view of how organizations are addressing risk today through technology, culture, governance and leadership.

Attending ISSA is an opportunity to step beyond compliance and into a deeper understanding of what drives safer, more resilient operations.

From leadership to frontline: a holistic view of safety

The program opens with keynote perspectives from senior industry leaders, including Ken Seitz, President & CEO of Nutrien, alongside safety experts exploring cross-industry insights. These sessions set the tone: safety is no longer a standalone function. It is embedded in leadership, strategy and operational decision-making.

This theme carries through a panel on Leadership, Culture, Technology and Innovation, where global executives examine how organizational culture and emerging technologies are shaping the future of safety performance.

Attendees will gain insight into how leading organizations are aligning leadership priorities with operational realities, a shift as mining operations become more complex and interconnected.

Four key themes shaping modern mine safety

The ISSA technical program is structured around four critical themes, each reflecting a different dimension of risk and opportunity:

1) Digital, AI & Automation

Sessions such as Agent Advantage, Digital Distance and Learning Machines explore how AI, automation and data systems are transforming hazard identification and decision-making. Attendees will learn how digital tools can move safety from reactive reporting to predictive risk management.

2) People, Health & Culture

Human factors remain at the core of safety. Sessions like Moments That Matter and Safe Minds, Safe Work emphasize how behaviours, mental health and workplace culture influence outcomes. The Psychological Health Panel further explores practical approaches to supporting worker well-being, early intervention and building resilient teams.

3) Ground, Assets & Physical Risk

Technical sessions such as Smart Ground Control and High Tech, Low Risk address traditional hazards through modern approaches. These sessions connect engineering practices with real-time monitoring and operational decision-making, offering practical insights into managing physical risk in dynamic environments.

4) Governance, Law & Systems

Safety is increasingly shaped by regulatory expectations and system-level thinking. Sessions like The Legal Line and Beyond the Checklist highlight how organizations are moving beyond compliance toward integrated risk governance frameworks that support accountability and continuous improvement.

Practical insights from industry panels

One of the program’s strengths is its focus on real-world application.

The Contractor Safety Panel explores how organizations are strengthening shared accountability across complex project environments. The Fall Protection Panel, organized by CSA, examines evolving standards and their application in mining operations, offering actionable insights for improving workplace safety.

Meanwhile, the Reproductive Health Panel highlights an emerging area of focus in mining, addressing workplace exposures and building more inclusive, health-conscious environments.

These sessions reflect the shift that safety is no longer limited to traditional hazards but includes physical, psychological and social dimensions of risk.

Connecting technology, risk and decision-making

Sessions like Safety in a Volatile World and Digital to the Core demonstrate how risk is influenced by external pressures, from market conditions to geopolitical uncertainty, while others focus on how data and analytics can support faster, more informed decisions on site.

The program also highlights the growing role of collaboration between operators, consultants, regulators and researchers, recognizing that no single discipline can address today’s safety challenges alone.

Why Attend?

The ISSA technical program offers more than knowledge, it provides perspective.

Attendees will leave with:

  • A clearer understanding of how leading organizations are approaching safety
  • Practical strategies for integrating technology, culture and governance
  • Insights into emerging risks and evolving regulatory expectations
  • Real-world examples that can be applied directly to operations
