Turning safety knowledge into action

At the ISSA International Safety Conference, hosted by CIM, the conversation around safety doesn’t stop at insight, it moves into action.

The ISSA short courses are designed for mining professionals who want to go beyond high-level discussions and build practical, applicable skills. Whether focused on technical systems, leadership behaviours or regulatory frameworks, these courses provide a hands-on opportunity to deepen expertise and bring tangible improvements back to site.

From awareness to application

Across the short course program, a consistent theme emerges, closing the gap between knowing and doing.

Insight to Action: Process Safety Essentials in Mining focus on one of the industry’s most critical and evolving areas. While process safety concepts are well-established in other sectors, many mining professionals are still navigating how to apply them in practice. This course helps participants identify gaps in existing systems and, importantly, define clear, immediate actions to strengthen critical risk management on site.

Similarly, Human and Organizational Performance in Practice: Learning from Real World Change shifts the conversation from theory to real-world application. Through case studies drawn from mining and other high-hazard industries, participants gain insight into how organizations are redesigning safety systems—moving away from blame-based approaches and toward learning, adaptability and system-level thinking.

These sessions reflect a broader industry shift, safety is no longer about procedures alone, but about how work is actually done.

Strengthening the human side of safety

While technical controls remain essential, the ISSA short courses place strong emphasis on the human dimension of safety.

The Mental Health First Aid Essentials course highlights how psychological health is directly connected to operational safety. Participants learn how to recognize early warning signs, respond effectively and foster open dialogue, skills that are increasingly critical in high-pressure mining environments.

Everyday Allies introduces practical approaches to inclusive leadership. By focusing on allyship, communication and workplace culture, the course demonstrates how small, everyday actions can have a measurable impact on team performance, engagement and ultimately, safety outcomes.

Together, these courses reinforce the important insight that strong safety performance depends on both systems and people.

Navigating risk, responsibility and regulation

Understanding legal and governance frameworks is another key component of the program.

The course on Lived Experience from a Legal Practitioner: Navigating Due Diligence, Supervisory Obligations and Criminal Negligence Laws in Canada in the Mining Context provides participants with a clearer understanding of their responsibilities within Canada’s evolving regulatory landscape. Rather than focusing solely on compliance, the course explores how to build robust frameworks that can withstand real-world scrutiny.

This perspective is complemented by courses that focus on operational risk, including Ventilation Strategies, Radiation Control, and Occupational Safety in Uranium Mines, where participants gain technical insight into managing complex underground hazards, and Insight to Action: Process Safety Essentials in Mining, which connects governance frameworks with day-to-day operational decisions.

These sessions equip attendees with both the knowledge and confidence to make informed, defensible decisions in high-risk environments.

Leadership as a safety lever

The Unlocking Vision Zero with the “Positive Leadership – Key to Vision Zero” Guide course explores how leadership behaviours directly influence safety culture. Using evidence-based frameworks, participants learn how to create environments where workers feel empowered to speak up, report risks early and take ownership of safety outcomes.

Building skills that transfer to site

What sets the ISSA short courses apart is their emphasis on transferability.

Each course is designed to be interactive, grounded in real-world scenarios and directly applicable to mining operations. Whether it’s improving ventilation design, strengthening safety culture or enhancing decision-making frameworks, participants are encouraged to reflect on their own context and identify changes they can implement immediately.

Why attend?

ISSA short courses offer a focused, practical complement to the broader conference program.

Participants will gain:

  • Actionable strategies to improve safety performance
  • Practical tools for managing risk, culture and compliance
  • Insights into emerging practices across global mining operations
  • Skills that can be applied immediately within their organization

In an industry where conditions, technologies and expectations are constantly evolving, staying current is essential. The ISSA short courses provide a direct path to equipping professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to build safer, more resilient mining operations.
