FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 18, 2020, Montréal, Québec. One of the strategic goals of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) is to expand awareness of the essential contribution mining makes to society. To fulfill that goal, CIM has partnered with Science North to create an exciting and interactive exhibit that will be on display full-time at science centres, museums and other venues across Canada.

Over a five-year period, it is estimated that as many as 1.5 million Canadian children and their families will engage in this exhibit that is focused on showcasing a high-tech industry critical to our quality of life, with an emphasis on safety and sustainability.

An external fundraising campaign began in late 2019 to help make this project a reality. CIM and Science North are pleased to announce that Don MacLean, founder and chairman of MacLean Engineering, has personally made a $100,000 contribution to this project.

“I am pleased to be able to support this effort to make our industry better understood by the public. I feel this is especially important at this time,” said MacLean.

MacLean is an industry icon who has supported many important ventures over the years and continuously looks to give back to the industry in a meaningful way.

“Don has been a strong supporter of our industry for many years and we are thrilled that he is supporting this project,” said Roy Slack, President of CIM. “Public awareness and understanding of what we do is critical to our industry and will become increasingly important as time goes by. This project goes above and beyond any public outreach we have done in the past.”

“Thank you, Don, for this and for all you have done for our industry,” said Slack.

External funding for the Pan-Canadian public awareness project continues with a goal of raising a further $1 million. MacLean’s generous contribution brings the total raised to date to $400,000.
