Centennial Scholarship

Liam Retty

Liam Retty is a fourth-year chemical engineering student attending Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. Throughout his undergraduate degree, he has had the opportunity to learn from and participate in the minerals industry through coursework, co-op placements, and community events. He recently finished a 16-month co-op placement in the mineral processing division of XPS, Industry Relevant Solutions (Glencore). In school, Liam has served as an executive member of the Laurentian University Chemical Engineering Club. Through the club, he organizes local industry tours to show students the opportunities available to them. Liam is passionate about encouraging lifelong learning and enjoys tutoring students to help them develop the skills to learn in many settings. He looks forward to applying his passion for learning to many fields within the minerals industry to improve his overall understanding and competence. He is hoping to use the opportunities provided to him by CIM to contribute to innovation and optimization within the field of mineral processing. Furthermore, Liam is excited to seek opportunities for improved environmental sustainability as the minerals industry looks towards the future.

Jessica Rudd

Jessica Rudd is a fourth year Chemical Engineering student at Laurentian University with a strong passion for the mining industry. She recently completed a sixteen-month co-op placement with Vale Base Metals at the Port Colborne Refinery, where she worked with their Process Technology team. Jessica’s passion for mining and metallurgy is further evidenced by her involvement with school clubs, where she has organized mineral resource-related events and industry tours. After graduation, Jessica intends on pursuing graduate studies in the field of mineral processing or metallurgy.

Mouna Cherif

Mouna Cherif is a doctoral student specializing in the mining field, with expertise in mining engineering, environmental science, and geochemistry. With a multidisciplinary approach, she is particularly interested in the challenges and innovations within the mining industry. Her academic background and research aim to enhance the sustainability of mining practices and reduce their environmental impact. Mouna is committed to contributing to innovative solutions that promote responsible and environmentally-friendly mining development.

Ken Hildebrandt Memorial Scholarship

Arielle Girard

Arielle Girard is a fourth-year student in mining and mineral engineering at Laval University. The three internships she completed, both underground and in open pits, provided her with valuable experience and knowledge in the mining industry. She has hands-on experience in short-term planning, project management, and surveying. While completing her studies, she is also actively involved in the department. She is the Vice President of Communications for the student’s association in mining and mineral engineering and serves as co-captain of Laval University's Canadian Mining Games team. A quick learner and dedicated individual, Arielle has been immersed in the mining industry since a young age. She looks forward to graduating and launching her career in mining.

Emmelie Blinder

Emmelie Blinder is a third-year mining engineering student at McGill University. Having completed internships in Quebec’s mining sector in technical roles and in Alberta’s oil sands in an operational role, Emmelie has gained valuable hands-on experience in both underground and surface operations, further deepening her knowledge and passion for the industry. Emmelie is actively involved in student leadership through her department’s student council, advocating for students’ academic rights. She is also involved in other student committees charged with the organization of events for engineering students at McGill. Emmelie is committed to contributing to the Canadian mining sector through safe, sustainable, and innovative solutions.

MER Memorial Scholarship

Eduardo Palavicino

Eduardo Palavicino is a fourth-year student at the University of Alberta pursuing a degree in mining engineering. Aa a recipient of the prestigious C Percy Cole Memorial Scholarship in Engineering, he has hands-on experience through the universities co-op program, which led to roles in the oil sands industry in Fort McMurray and a current position as a long-range planner at a coal mine operated by EVR. He served as a Warrant Officer Second Class in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, where he played an active role in mentorship and community service.
