Elk Valley, British Columbia, right off the Alberta border, is an area rich in coal production, the largest local industry seconded only by forestry. There are five coal operations in the area owned and operated by the Teck Coal Corporation. The towns of Elkford, Sparwood, Fernie and the Crowsnest Pass together make a population of around 20,000. The Crowsnest Branch of CIM is tied to these coal mines.
The CIM Crowsnest Branch proudly serves the Elk Valley and Crowsnest Pass region, supporting a vibrant community of mining professionals in one of the world’s most important metallurgical coal producing areas. Spanning the BC-Alberta border, our region includes the towns of Elkford, Sparwood, Fernie, and the Crowsnest Pass.
Relaunching in 2026, the branch is aiming to establish itself as a hub for professional connection and growth in the region.
Our focus is on creating meaningful networking opportunities and professional development programs that strengthen our local mining community.
Our branch serves the professionals who power the local metallurgical coal operations and the broader natural resources sector in the region.
Our Commitment:Through engaging events, technical presentations, and social gatherings, we foster connections between industry veterans, emerging professionals, and students. We're committed to supporting the next generation through scholarships for trades and technical post-secondary students, helping build a strong future workforce for our region's mining industry.
Whether you're looking to expand your professional network, enhance your technical knowledge, or contribute to our community, the Crowsnest Branch welcomes all mining and minerals professionals and interested members of the public to participate in our events.

By being a part of CIM, I’ve grown this network that is so much greater than I ever had, had I just stuck to being an engineer at a mining operation.
