Hatch-CIM Mining & Minerals Project Development Safety Award
The McArthur River operation, located in northern Saskatchewan, is the world's largest high-grade uranium mine. Ore grades within the deposit are 100 times the world average, which means the operation can produce more than 18 million pounds of uranium each year by mining only 150 to 200 tonnes of ore per day.
The electrical substation, distribution and backup generation project was constructed to supply power for future expansions of the underground mine. Site preparation was initiated in 2012, with full construction completed in 2015.
Cameco was recognized for an exceptional safety program at the McArthur River Electrical Substation Project in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Several safety-specific programs and systems were developed for construction of the project which led to an outstanding safety record.
