CIM is pleased to announce the appointment of Randy Smallwood, as the Incoming President-Elect (2027-2028). Mr. Smallwood will assume the role of CIM president in May 2027, following John Rhind (2026-2027) and Candace MacGibbon (2025-2026).
In this role Mr. Smallwood will work closely with the president and president-elect to provide direction to CIM, ensuring it continues to be the leading not-for-profit technical institute for professionals within the Canadian minerals, metals, materials and energy industries.
Randy Smallwood is a founding member of Wheaton Precious Metals and serves as its president and CEO. Previously, he was executive vice-president of corporate development, leading the company’s growth through the evaluation and acquisition of streaming opportunities. Before joining Wheaton Precious Metals, he was director of project development at Wheaton River Minerals Ltd., playing a key role in its 2005 merger with Goldcorp.
Mr. Smallwood was instrumental in building Wheaton River/Goldcorp (now part of Newmont) into one of the world’s largest and most profitable gold companies. He continues to focus on advancing Wheaton Precious Metals’ growth profile. He holds a geological engineering degree from the University of British Columbia and a mine engineering diploma from the British Columbia Institute of Technology. From 2020 to 2023, he also served as Chair of the World Gold Council.
