Students who want to work in the minerals, metals, and energy sectors often don’t know where to start. CIM is working to change that through mentorship, technical resources and local networks.
Our mentorship program pairs students with industry professionals to provide practical guidance from people who work in the field. Student members also receive access to technical papers, journals and conference proceedings, including peer-reviewed material on OneMine. Those resources help students understand the industry’s challenges and potential solutions.
“I think CIM is a really good resource for students, especially for learning about the different aspects of this huge industry. There are so many jobs I never even knew existed! It's great for expanding students' knowledge and opportunities,” said Hendrika S., University of Guelph.
Live and recorded presentations and short courses, found on CIM’s Professional Development page, focus on technical and practical topics. Many are available year-round and are free to CIM members.
CIM conferences give students the chance to meet experts in person and expand professional connections. Upcoming events include the MEMO conference in Calgary, which will feature operations-focused panels, workshops and case studies plus a Suncor-sponsored plant tour, and the Capital Projects Symposium, which will examine risk and value in project delivery. Explore our Events page for more.
CIM student members receive preferred pricing on CIM events.
“CIM keeps me connected with the industry and my colleagues and up to speed on new developments,” said Jeff C., team leader in mining engineering, who joined CIM as a student.
Through November 30, CIM is offering a 50 per cent discount on student memberships.
