Message from the CIM Director of Events regarding the CIM Convention and COVID-19

11 March 2020

To the CIM Community:

Our annual signature event, the CIM Convention & Expo is set to begin on May 2, 2020, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Rest assured that the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) is being diligent in ensuring that the safety and security of our attendees, staff and operational personnel remains the top priority.

With the following in mind, there are currently no plans for CIM to cancel or postpone the Convention as a result of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak:

As of March 10, the Public Health Agency of Canada assesses the public health risk associated with COVID-19 as low for Canada. The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) and the Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) also consider that risk within British Columbia remains low. In addition, there are no travel warnings for Canada and the USA from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

As we move ahead with planning and implementing the program, CIM will continue to place high importance on facilitating measures that will ensure optimal health and sanitary conditions for everyone onsite during the event. The Vancouver Convention Centre have taken additional precautionary measures to further support our high standard of cleanliness. These include:

  • Implementing enhanced cleaning and sanitizing protocols by the housekeeping team
  • Scheduling additional housekeeping staff during event days for greater coverage of high-touch areas
  • Placing additional hand sanitizing stations throughout both buildings

We believe it is critically important for our community to remain adequately, properly and responsibly informed on COVID-19 and will continue to monitor this situation closely. We will continue to take direction from the authorities referenced above in this release as required.

Thank you.
