The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), in collaboration with the OneCIM Steering Committee and the Robert M. Buchan Department of Mining at Queen’s University, is implementing a mentorship pilot program. The aim of this program is to help Queen’s students prepare for leadership roles and establish a strong network before they enter the industry.

The program is currently underway at Queen’s and initial feedback from the program has been positive. Based on the program’s success, it may be implemented at other Canadian post-secondary institutions with mining schools. A mentorship guideline has been developed and preliminary matches have been made between Queen’s mining students and volunteer mentors.

“This is an excellent program and I look forward to working with CIM to ensure this is fruitful and productive for all concerned,” said Dr. Laeeque Daneshmend, a professor and graduate chair at Queen’s who has agreed to be the faculty liaison for this program.

“I am very pleased to see this moving forward and I am sure my student colleagues will be excited to have this opportunity,” said Matt Vokes, one of the students who helped initiate the program.

For students or faculty at mining schools across Canada interested in getting involved with the program, or industry professionals who would like to become mentors, please contact Elaine Kinsella, Constituent Services Coordinator at CIM National by email at ekinsella@cim.org or by phone at (514)-939-2710 ext. 1312.
