CIM Vancouver Branch celebrates another successful Student Night

The CIM Vancouver Branch kicked off the 2018 seasonal celebrations with its annual Student Night on November 22, 2018. Student Night is the Branch’s flagship event that connects industry leaders directly to local undergraduate and graduate students and education organizations.

The Branch proudly raised $20,000 from corporate sponsors and (with the help of education administrators) distributed the amount in the form of scholarships, book prizes and donations to students from UBC, BCIT, SFU and MABC’s MineralsEd program. In addition to monetary support, Student Night provides an excellent opportunity for students to volunteer and network with industry leaders.

“CIM Vancouver has provided amazing opportunities to engage directly with industry, advanced my professional development, offered financial support and helped me become a better member of the mining community,” said Nabil Khan, UBC Mining Engineering student and winner of the Turnbull Cup.

The event was well attended by 210 participants from industry and academia. Michael Davies of Teck Resources was the main speaker and gave a presentation: The Importance of Mining’s Human Aspect. The event was further supported by Kirk LaPointe of Business in Vancouver, and by corporate sponsors including the title sponsor, Klohn Crippen Berger.

The CIM Vancouver Branch sincerely thanks Shervin Teymouri for honouring the greatly missed Rimas Pakalnis, who was an inspirational local and global leader in mining.
