Safety Statistics – Activity

Both CIM members and mining safety professionals have expressed that safety statistics provided for each of the various activities related to mining would be useful. Activities include exploration, construction, excavation, blasting, mine operation, mineral processing, transportation and site reclamation.

Mineral Exploration

The Association for Mineral Exploration British Columbia (AME BC) and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) recently presented their third annual Canadian Mineral Exploration Health and Safety Annual Report. The 2007 report includes data from 94 companies active in mineral exploration in Canada (of 1087 contacted). Specific categories include the following:

  • Surface exploration
  • Surface drilling
  • Underground exploration

When available, these safety data are provided for provinces, territories, and Canada:

  • Persons' days of activity
  • Equivalent no. of exposure hours
  • Number of fatalities
  • Number of lost workdays
  • Frequency of lost workday incidents
  • Severity of injury rate
