Barry Smee was born in Edmonton and graduated with a B.Sc. degree in geology and chemistry from the University of Alberta in 1969. His first job was as a geochemical analyst with United Keno Mines in the Yukon, then with Cominco as the Western District Geochemist. From 1971 to 1975, Barry was a member of the geochemical team at Barringer Research, where he had the opportunity to live in Australia for a time and travel the world doing geochemical research.
He moved to Ottawa in 1975 with the Geological Survey of Canada and also worked toward a Ph.D. in geology at the University of New Brunswick under the tutelage of famed geochemist Dr. Gerry Govett. Barry performed the early research that lead to geochemical methods that apply to overburden covered areas of Canada’s north.
From 1980 to 1990 he was employed with Pan Ocean Oil and Abermin Resources where he held positions from Exploration Technology Manager to Exploration Manager. The group was involved in the discovery of the Jason lead-zinc deposits in the Yukon, the Hope Bay gold belt and the Lac Cinquante uranium deposit in Nunavut.
