Geological Society - Terms of Reference

The mission of the Geological Society is to be the society of choice for all geoscientists, in Canada and elsewhere, in the field of mining and mineral exploration. The aims of the Society are:

1. to stimulate and advance the application of geoscience in the search for new discoveries and the development of known minerals, deposits, through field excursions, technical sessions, short courses, publications and lecture tours and through professional and social networking;

2. to promote and encourage research and education in the Earth Sciences; and

3. to recognize excellence in geoscience, as applied to the industry.

To further these aims:

  • The Society has its own professional journal, Exploration and Mining Geology, which is published quarterly and circulated to subscribing members, libraries and institutions worldwide; it has a regular Newsletter in the CIM Bulletin and it sponsors the publication of CIM Special Volumes.
  • The Society sponsors an Annual Field Conference at a different location in Canada each year — these conferences consist of a two-day technical meeting on a specific specific theme, which is preceded and followed by related field trips and short courses; and it participates in the organization of technical sessions at the CIM Annual General Meeting. The Society also sponsors a University Visiting Lecturer program.
  • The Society represents CIM in the Canadian Geoscience Council, assists in the selection process for various geoscience- related CIM awards and scholarships, and speaks for all the geoscientist members of CIM on CIM Council and on numerous Institute committees.

The Geological Society, which started out as the Geology Division in 1942, achieved CIM Society status in 1991. It is the third largest Society or Division of the CIM, comprising approximately 20% of CIM members.
