Geological Society
The Mission
Founded in 1942 as the Geology Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), the Geological Society brings together men and women with a common interest in the earth sciences.
To stimulate and advance the application of geoscience in the search, discovery, appraisal and exploitation of mineral deposits through field conferences, technical sessions, short courses, publications, lecture tours, as well as professional and social networking.

Membership
The Geological Society is one of the largest of CIM's constituent Divisions and Societies.Members of the Geological Society comprise approximately 20% of the total CIM membership. Some 15% of Society members reside outside Canada.

The Structure
The business of the Society is conducted by an elected Council consisting of officers, councillor, committee chairmen and section representatives.

Besides these committees, the Society also appoints a representative to several Institute committees.
The Society represents CIM in the Canadian Geoscience Council, assists in the selection process for various geoscience-related CIM awards and scholarships, and speaks for all the geoscientist members of CIM on CIM Council.

Most of the activities of the Geological Society are conducted by the standing committees. There are two meetings for the general membership. One of these is the Bi-Annual Field Conference, which consists of a one or two-day meeting on a specific theme, preceded and/or followed by related field trips.
The Bi-Annual Field Conference generally takes place in September at a site chosen for its proximity to an established mining camp.
Apart from the Bi-Annual Field Conference, the Society organizes a general interest technical session for the membership at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of CIM in the Spring each year.
The GeoSoc liaises closely with the Mineral Deposit Division (MDD) members of the Geological Association of Canada (GAC) and in 2005 decided to become joint contributors to the Gangue- the newsletter of the MDD. To check it out at, click here.

Publications
The Geological Society has its own quarterly journal called Exploration and Mining Geology. The Society also publishes a monthly newsletter in the CIM Bulletin.
Occasionally, the Geological Society sponsors the publication of special volumes. Recent examples are Special Volume 45 entitled Guide to the Evaluation of Gold Deposits and Volume 46 entitled Porphyry Deposits of the Northwestern Cordillera of North America.
A complete list of special volumes, including those still in print, is available from the CIM National Office.
The Geological Society, in collaboration with Science North in Sudbury, has also produced Ground Work - Exploring for Minerals in Canada, an interactive CD-ROM about the importance of minerals and mineral exploration. This program, created as a CIM centennial project, has been distributed as a teaching tool to thousands of schools across the country.
