Environmental Society

The CIM Environmental Society was founded in 1998 to provide a forum for the exchange of knowledge and skills in technical and environmental areas between professionals in the mining, metallurgical, petroleum and coal industries. A major revitalization effort got underway in 2004 and 2005 with a new executive. The society aims to provide value to its members by promoting effective use of science and technology in meeting industries' and communities' environmental goals.

The new executive has developed a new mission, vision and a set of strategic goals for the society to reflect the current needs of the mining industry.

Mission

To build and sustain a strong society that provides value to its members in alignment with the CIM's vision.

Vision

To provide leadership in knowledge sharing and professional development for a broad range of environmental fields, and in the development of environmental practices and standards.

Strategic goals (2004-2009)

  • organize environmental symposia coinciding with the CIM annual general meetings and other environmental meetings of interest;
  • organize workshops, short courses and panel discussions;
  • establish awards recognizing the contributions of the society members;
  • increase the society's membership base to levels that adequately reflect the numbers of environmental professionals in mining, metallurgy, petroleum industries and related organizations;
  • define research priorities based on the needs of industry, regulatory agencies and public;
  • advance understanding of the environmental issues through interdisciplinary scientific research and development.

2008-2009 Web Meetings

Fostering a sustainable industry through online learning.

  1. David E. Bleiker, Eastern Canada Mining Sector Leader, AMEC Earth & Environmental.

    Mine Water Management
    PMF, PMP, inflow design flood, environmental design flood, treshold flood, regional flood and return period are some the terms involved in designing tailings and contaminated water management facilities. This presentation provides working definitions of these terms and explains why and how they are selected. The importance of selcting the proper distributions for a runoff event will be illustrated through a simple example.

  2. Pierre Gratton, vice president - sustainable development and public affairs, MAC, and Philip Bousquet, director - regulatory affairs, PDAC.

    Aboriginal Outreach
    Investigating the mining/exploration industry efforts to engage with aboriginal peoples, with a focus on: PDAC's MOU and MAC's MOU with the Assembly of First Nations; MAC consultations on draft aboriginal relations policy with aboriginal oragnizations and communities; MAC/PDAC efforts to establish a mining/aboriginal forum in NWT. The work of the MAC Community of Interests Advisory Panel and the PDAC Aboriginal Afairs Committee on aboriginal issues will be discussed.

  3. Chiristine Moore, senior scientist, Intrinsik

    The Shore Road Soil Study - A Risk Assessment on the Effects of 40 Years of Lead Smelting
    Xstrata Zinc Canada has operated a lead smelter within the community of Belledune, NB, for over 40 years. Recently, new industry attempting to establish itself within the area were confronted by local environmental groups who cited that heavy pollution from the existing smelter should preclude any further development. Xstrata Zinc has completed a communiy soil study that has assessed the true risks and effects from the past 40 years of lead smelting within the area.
