SPEAKER – David Anstey
TOPIC – Alberta’s New Tailings Management Framework
On March 13 2015, the Government of Alberta released its Tailings Management Framework for the Minable Athabasca Oil Sands. The framework provides direction to miners on the management of oil sands fluid tailings volumes with the aim of reducing environmental risk and impacts on the Lower Athabasca landscape.
The release of the document was accompanied by the suspension of Directive 074 by the Alberta Energy Regulator. The regulator has subsequently advised that it will be working with industry and other stakeholders over the next year to implement the framework and provide a new set of requirements for tailings management.
The framework represents a significant shift in direction for oil sands tailings management in Alberta. The presentation will look forward to see what the framework may mean for existing and future oil sands miners and will discuss the opportunities it presents for improving oil sands tailings management.
