Modifications To Improve LHD-Type Vehicles

Abstract Load-haul-dump machines equipped with a torque converter and hydraulic pumps have been field tested by means of an engine monitoring instrumentation package. It was found that owing to parasitic losses in the ancillaries and drivetrain, maximum available useable power may peak at less than full engine speed. Simple reduction of engine speed may save 15 to 25 per cent on fuel consumption, with no significant loss of available power. On some machines, speed reduction will require modification of the torque converter. The cost of this 'modification, when necessary, would be offset by reductions in exhaust emissions, ventilation requirements, fuel consumption, heat, noise and hydraulic system maintenance, and by increased life of rotating components and filters and machine availability.
