Research in Physical Metallurgy

Research, whether applied or fundamental, is a human endeavour which increases our understanding of nature. It is insufficient to simply observe, explore, record and classify. It is necessary, as well, to fit the observations into a satisfying theoretical scheme; that is, to synthesize. Two exam pies of successful research programs in physical metallurgy are discussed from this point of view. A pessimistic view is taken of the prospects for rapid growth of research activities in the Canadian metallurgical industry.
