Lightweight Concrete Aggregates from Clays and Shales

CIM Bulletin1951
Lightweight concrete aggregates have been used for many years but it is only within recent times that their use has become widespread. Those in use may be classed in two groups: low density and high density. The low-density aggregates have low strength but high insulation value and find their chief use in non-load- bearing concrete. The higher density aggregates have higher strength but lower insulation value and find their chief use in load-bearing concrete.
