Enhancing Safe and Reliable Operations By Focussing on “Green Days”: Sustainability update, one year later

CIM Vancouver 2016
Mr Brian Marshall (General Manager - The Mosaic Company - Colonsay Mine)
Mosaic is several years into a multi-year CI initiative aimed at developing a culture of Operational Excellence (OE) and enhancing capacity through Continuous Improvement (CI) projects focused on Maintenance Workflow, Execution, Asset Integrity and Reliability. The expectation is for local leadership teams to develop expertise in sustained follow-through on CI activities and to continually raise the bar on performance. Building leadership capacity at all levels was identified as a foundational element to help ensure long-term sustainability.
In 2013-14 we completed extremely successful proving runs at two sites. Our approach involved defining “Green Days” based on measures of safety, environmental performance and productivity, cascading those measures through the whole organization, and aligning leadership around performance goals. We out-performed our Green Day targets while developing a highly engaged workforce. Once the proving runs were over, we faced the challenge of how to maintain the momentum and tackle cost through the ups and downs of routine operations. Our experience reinforced the learning that OE is as much about leadership and behaviour as it is business strategies, technologies, and process improvements.
We will share data to highlight the importance of ongoing focus on leadership and behaviour as the most important driver for operational excellence and continuous improvement.
