Review of an Innovative re-development project to convert a disturbed mine waste rock stockpile into a 10MW photovoltaic single-axis tracking solar array at the Carlota Mine in Arizona. Topics will include project development, stakeholder value proposition, and successes and challenges experienced regarding. This “Brightfield” will be constructed as leaching operations wind-down and continued concurrent reclamation activities are completed at the copper mine. This socially responsible project will convert what was once a Greenfield, and that is now a closed stockpile on United Stated Forest Service land, to a 25+ year clean renewable energy brightfield. This will be the first solar project permitted and developed on USFS land. The project will reduce CO2 emissions and generate renewable energy while producing positive long-term cash flow for the company and be the flagship international CSR project for KGHM. This is part of a comprehensive and sustainable closure plan that offsets long term closure and O&M costs at the Carlota Mine. The project compliments the long-standing sustainable development of KGHM and exceptional performance by the Carlota Mine since permitting in the later 90’s and initiation of operations in 2008. This project exemplifies KGHM’s upholding the highest environmental standard in the closure of its mines.
