Mining innovation in AREVA Mines: themes and organization

CIM Montreal 2015
Jean-Michel Marino (AREVA Mines)
The mining activities of AREVA cover uranium exploration, mining, processing, and rehabilitation of closed sites. In order to improve the operational performances of the operating mines (Canada, Kazakhstan, Niger), and to insure the competitiveness of the projects, the Direction of Operations and Projects of AREVA Mines dedicates a significant effort to activation of experience and innovative actions; its Department of the Research and Development develops an expert network within mining units and AREVA Group, and also in coordination with other companies or partners.
The developed themes concern mainly:
- knowledge of deposits
- mining methods and technologies
- ore processing technics
- environment and sites rehabilitation
The initial design of the Cigar Lake mining method (jet boring) is a good example of past references; for the present, we look for instance at the continuous survey of cavities excavated by jet, the precipitation in fluid bed, the simulation of the flows of production by in situ recovery …
For future, the search for innovation is directed on:
- identification of industrial opportunities
- valuation of future resources (conventional or not)
- control of the environmental footprint
