Developing in Non Mining Cultures

Vancouver 2014
Nevsun Resources, a Vancouver based mining company operates the first modern mine in the State of Eritrea. Since independence in 1992, the country has been developing to expand and diversify its economic base including its bounty of mineral resources. The Bisha deposit, one of the world’s premier mineral assets, became a fully operational mine in 2011. There have been and continues to be challenges and opportunities with respect to being the inaugural operation in the country. This has included working in a system initially void of a regulatory framework to address an significant industrial mining operation. This has also included working in a society that had limited applicable human resource skill sets to the mining sector. Local community engagement was not problematic due to the remoteness of the operation, but communities in the vicinity had no exposure or understanding of a mining operation. There have also been challenges in sourcing and delivering key supplies and equipment to a remote location in Eritrea that had substandard road conditions and no electricity. Despite the challenges, ongoing improvements have been realized to make this a truly world class operation.
