Abstract Despite comprehensive policies, procedures and
regulations aimed at protecting workers, several
people die each year
in mining equipment-related collisions. The
limited sightlines of heavy equipment operators
coupled with difficult operating conditions are
major contributing factors to the majority of
mining equipment collisions. Although several
commercial, dedicated products have been
introduced to address these issues, none have
achieved significant market acceptance. The
current collision avoidance solutions lack
integration with mine-wide fleet management and
on-board equipment monitoring systems, causing
unnecessary false alarms, reducing overall
effectiveness and limiting the ability of
analyzing incidents and near-misses after they
occur. This paper will describe the integrated
approach taken by Modular Mining Systems to
overcome these limitations.
