Mining of McArthur River Zone 4 North

Abstract Cameco's McArthur River Mine, the highest grade uranium mine in the world, is located 600 km north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Due to the high grade of the ore and proximity to water bearing structures, McArthur employs development and mining methodologies that are unique to the Canadian mining industry. A description of the mining plan for the Zone 4 North orebody, scheduled to begin production in 2013, will describe the mythologies and controls planned for the area. Prior to production mining and development in areas with risk of water inflow, the ore zone will be isolated from the water-bearing Athabasca Sandstone by establishing freeze walls within the host rock. Raisebore mining with cemented backfill will be the mining method to extract the ore. Several operational controls developed at McArthur River will be used for the safe mining to be carried out with this highly regulated orebody.
