Canadian Mining Credentials Program – Support for Labour Market Transitions

CIM Vancouver 2010
Abstract The mining industry needs to make the best use of all potential sources of skilled workers in order to address looming skills shortages in the sector. The Mining Industry Human Resources Council has been coordinating a collaborative effort of key sector stakeholders to develop a system that will support recognition of skills and facilitate the rapid deployment of experienced workers into the labour force. The Canadian Mining Credentials Program (CMCP) uses National Occupational Standards as the benchmark to assess and recognize the skills of workers who have experience in other mine sites, other provinces, other sectors and even, in other countries. This presentation will highlight the work achieved to date and describe the mining industry’s plan to develop addition occupational standards and to launch a worker certification program across Canada.
