ADVANCING MINING SAFETY IN NORTH AMERICA - Taking the Next Step with the Earth Moving Equipment Safety Round Table (EMESRT)

CIM Vancouver 2010
Abstract The EMESRT initiative originated in Australia and was supported with extensive resources from leading and respected mining firms with a vision to significantly improve mining safety performance. The mining safety round table included members Anglo American, Barrick, BHP Billington, Newcrest, Newmont, Vale, Xstrata and the University of Queensland pursued their vision through the development of comprehensive design philosophies. The approach is based on the introduction of human factors considerations into earth moving equipment design to manage risks that impact on the health and safety of mining operators and maintainers. The reduction of risk through the application of design philosophies is an enabler for construction engagement of mine original equipment manufacturers with mining end point users. The presentation profiles the design philosophies which in themselves provide an excellent reference on mine equipment risk areas, and discusses the next steps for effective adoption of these philosophies in North America. The EMESRT initiative sets the stage for supporting safety and invites your participation in this important effort.
