Mechanical Analyses to Enhance the Safety of Heavy Mining Vehicle Rim and Wheel Assemblies

Abstract The failure of the multi –piece wheels commonly used on heavy mining vehicles has caused fatalities and serious injuries to underground and surface workers. Experience has dictated that these types of wheel configurations require careful assembly, appropriate maintenance, and overall management to ensure they safely contain the high pressures and volumes of air that are required to support the vehicle loads. This presentation will outline the current research being conducted at the University of Windsor in conjunction with several partners. The research is aimed at completing a detailed analysis of existing wheel designs, and developing safer design proposals for the multi-piece rim components and construction. The presentation will include the process for computer aided engineer evaluation of the wheels. Material degradation, mechanical design approaches to ensure safe use and the anticipated outcomes of this collaborative research effort will be discussed.
