Grade control and the Life of Mine plan

Abstract Many complex decisions are made during feasibility stages to determine the viability of a mining project. Material characteristics including grade, gangue mineralogy, contaminants, processing parameters and concentrate quality are normally all considered.

When an operation commences grade control, however, the parameters used to evaluate the project are not always applied to grade control. They may change, are lost in translation, or the people who understand them have moved on. This leads to divergence between the way the mine is planned and what actually happens. As time goes by, this divergence from the mine plan often increases and is exacerbated by metal production pressures, changing economic conditions, and personnel turnover.

How do you overcome the inconsistency in material assignment that hampers the ability to reconcile your long term plan based on resource model predictions? The tools to overcome inconsistent material assignment can be developed as algorithms which account for many complex parameters such as assigning priorities for material type selection, determining whether ore loss or dilution is less costly, and the effective mining selectivity.
