One Industry Voice - Computing Technology Standards for Surface Mining

CIM Edmonton 2008
Abstract The expanding use of computing and network technology systems in the mining industry on large mining equipment and for mine control systems has been beneficial for productivity improvements. The need to be able to quickly utilize and apply computing and networking technology in the mine has been inhibited by several issues. In 2005 a movement began within the mining industry to address and improve the situation. The movement started with an informal group of mining companies and evolved into a formal structure under the auspices of SMART. The objective of the movement was for the surface mining industry working together as ``Òne Voice``, and with OEM and technology suppliers, to establish a set of technology standards and solutions that would address the issues faced by the mining industry operators. This presentation reviews the issues, the process, and the results to date of this movement.
