Identifying and Managing Risks Posed by Advances in Technology

CIM Edmonton 2008
Abstract A number of mining technologies have been widely introduced over the last few decades or are under development. These include heap leaching of low grade copper and gold ores, remote mining, driverless (autonomous) trucks, etc. Adoption of these technologies is typically based on technical and economic feasibilities and not a broader sustainability evaluation. This presentation will demonstrate how a broader sustainability assessment may impact implementation decisions and deployment of the technologies. It is also interesting to note that the mining industry is not alone in the responses to the broader sustainability aspects of new technologies.
