Recruiting and Retaining Women in Currently Male-Dominated Occupations

Abstract Everyone talks about looming skills shortages and increased competition for talent. We know the human resources problem facing the mining industry. We know we have to do something about it...but what?...and who?...and when? Women in Resource Development (WRDC) will discuss these questions based on its experience working to increase the participation of women in resource-based industries using Voisey’s Bay Nickel Company as a case study.

VBNC opened it demonstration processing plant in Argentia, Newfoundland, in November, 2005 with a high level of women employed in trades, technology and operations (TTO) occupations. How did they manage this achievement when the industry is so competitive for workers and when there are so few women applying for jobs in the mining industry? WRDC will draw on its experience working with VBNC so the audience can identify parallel opportunities to recruit skilled women. The presentation will focus on the Voisey’s Bay Nickel project with added information from Husky Energy’s White Rose offshore oilfield development. Tools and strategies about what companies can do immediately (and in the short, medium, and long-term) to recruit and retain skilled women workers will be provided.
