Overview of the latest satellite communication technology and its application to the Mining Sector

Abstract The goal of this presentation is be to introduce the audience to the newest technology available in terms of satellite communications and its application to the mining sector in Canada and abroad. It will review the existing and legacy satellite system that most people are familiar with and will introduce the newest portable satellite systems. The presentation will cover all systems from small handheld to large Land Earth Station. The goal is to provide a broad overview of the technology that is available and how it can assist the mining professionals at every step of the mining process, from exploration to production. The main systems that will be addressed are Iridium, Globalstar, MSV, Thuraya, Thuraya DSL, Inmarsat RBGAN and BGAN, VSAT KU band, VSAT C band. I will also address the SCADA and Tracking systems available through the different satellite providers. I will concentrate on the application of the available technology to the mining industry and illustrate via a series of examples the way satcoms can improve the efficiency and security of mining operations at every level.
