Making a Difference in Ontario Education!

CIM Vancouver 2002
Abstract In Canada, elementary and secondary school education is provincially mandated, therefore, "one size" does not fit all when it comes to creating classroom resources. The minerals industry would like to see educational materials designed to meet a broad need nationally. Unfortunately this approach does not necessarily add value to the education system. Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada Mining Matters (PDACMM) is a charitable organization with a mandate to educate students about Canada's geology and mineral resource endowment, to promote awareness of the importance of rocks, metals, and minerals and mining through the dissemination of information and the development and distribution of educational programs and material, and to co-ordinate with other charitable, educational and governmental agencies or organizations in developing education programs and material. Active since 1994, PDACMM has been extending the successful MABC educational model and developing unique products for the Ontario system. Additionally, PDACMM is helping the minerals industry to understand the opportunities and limitations to promote knowledge about the value of mineral development through the provincial curricula. Our contributions are valued because they respect the needs of the system, teachers, and students - members of the minerals industry are making a difference in Ontario education!
