The Advantages of the Collaborative Research Model

CIM Vancouver 2002
Abstract Collaboration between the developer of a new technology and the first user of the technology is key to maximizing the research outcomes, reducing timeframes and minimizing costs. The Precarn model requires and supports such collaboration and has led to the development of cutting edge intelligent systems technologies that are being used in the mining industry. The application of intelligent systems to open pit and underground mining can increasse the productivity and international competitiveness of Canadian mines. Equally important, intelligent systems substantially reduce the environmental risks to miners and provides them with new skill sets relevant to an innovative economy. Precarn's experience in fostering collaborative research projects of direct relevance to the Canadian mining industry will be illustrated through reference to actual projects undertaken in recent years.
