Confronting mining’s image issues

The topic of diversity, it turns out, is quite diverse. That was apparent to the more than 500 mining professionals who attended yesterday’s plenary session.

Addressing the panelists and the gathered mining professionals, moderator and CBC journalist Mark Kelley was blunt when pointing out a major issue facing the mining industry. “I would humbly say that you have an image problem,” he said, referring to his position as a relative mining “outsider.” Read More

Busloads of students from the Vancouver area came to M4S Monday morning for the opportunity to learn how mining relates to their everyday lives. CIM talked to Gary Flynn, a Grade 5/6 teacher from West Heights Elementary School in Mission, B.C. to see what inspired him to make the hour and a half trip with his class into Vancouver for the event. Technical program opens eyes with enlightening talks

Delegates interested in the technical program absorbed information like sponges yesterday, as sessions began in seven streams. Laeeque Daneshmend of Queen’s University was the first presenter of this year’s Rock Engineering and Mine Design stream, and the audience got a glimpse of the important work he has been doing predicting blast vibration using neural network techniques.
