VB (Jim) Cook

Jim CookJim enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, boating, canoeing and loved Lake Superior. He enjoyed time with his wife and family at their home on the lake. A family joke was how Jim could always find a rock to hit with the propeller in an unfamiliar lake, so a shear pin was a standard safety item in the boat, and family fishing/tenting trips always included rain.

In 1962, Jim started V.B. Cook Company (Consulting Engineers). The success of V.B. Cook Company, now Cook Engineering, a division of Genivar, remained a point of pride for him. The company worked extensively in the grain industry, construction of highway bridges and the mining industry, both across Canada and the U.S. Although Jim worked hard to make his company successful and well-respected, he also had time for local and national groups. He participated fully in the community of Thunder Bay as a member of the Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce, the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce (founding member), United Appeal, the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment (LSSR) and the LSSR Senate. Jim was also a fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada.

Jim joined CIM in 1962; he was very active in the maintenance/engineering division from 1977 to 1982, and was chairman of the division in 1980. In 1983, he was awarded the McParland Memorial Award, and he received the Distinguished Lecturer Award and was part of the Distinguished Lecturers Program in 1985. Jim was awarded the CIM Fellowship Award in 1988 and became a life member in 1994.

Through CIM, Jim met many future colleagues and friends from around the world. A quote from a dear friend and CIM member, Pat Patterson: “We consider you to be a very good friend, an excellent engineer, officer and gentleman. You are a true blue Canadian who has devoted your life to a wonderful wife and family and your career to the betterment of the construction and mining industries in North America. Keep going!

He died on July 5, 2012.
We are proud of you and love you.
