Ottawa branch gets groundbreaking lesson

By Jean-François Fiset

On May 6, the CIM Ottawa Branch hosted Maurice Lamontagne of the Geological Survey of Canada whose presentation, “Haiti, Chile, Canada — Earthquakes seen on a global scale” took an in-depth look at recent earthquakes in high-risk countries such as Haiti and Chile. Plate tectonics is the major driver of most earthquake activity, and parts of Canada are located in places where major earthquakes can occur. In the past 100 years, at least nine earthquakes in or near Canada have registered a magnitude greater than seven Lamontagne provided useful information on how to survive this natural disaster.

Jean-François Fiset is the CIM Ottawa Branch chair.
