CIM is the voice of the men and women who work in the Canadian minerals industries. Since its founding in 1898, CIM has grown to span the country and to become the association of choice for minerals professionals.
Today, CIM has six Districts and numerous specialized Societies, Divisions and Committees. Total national memberships exceeds 10,000. In addition, CIM has more than 200 corporate members and thousands of local members in 60 branches. Ten percent of CIM's total membership is based overseas.
CIM represents executives, operations specialists and technical personnel at every level of the minerals and petroleum industries.
Established in 1944, the Coal and Oil Sands Division was formed, at the request of the CIM Council, by the joint efforts of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia and the coal miners from Western Canada.
Mission of the Coal and Oil Sands Division
To promote engineering and human aspects related to coal technology, including exploration, mining, processing, transportation, utilization, and marketing.

- Promote and encourage education to convince young people to pursue careers in the minerals industry.
- Promote and encourage research in coal technology.
- Facilitate the exchange of information and data on all subjects related to coal.
- Educate the general public about the coal industry; particularly, its commitment to the environment and contribution to the energy sector of the economy.
Structure of the Coal and Oil Sands Division
The Coal and Oil Sands Division consists of two primary committees: the Executive Committee and the Steering Committee, each chaired by the Coal and Oil Sands Division Chairman. In addition, there are nine other standing committees:

The Coal and Oil Sands Division also has representatives on the principal Institute committees.

Activities of the Coal and Oil Sands Division
Branch Meetings
The CIM consists of local Branches in major cities and towns across Canada. Most of these branches meet on a monthly basis from September to June. Many members of the Coal and Oil Sands Division are active participants in the operations of the local branches.
Annual General Meeting
The AGM, Canada's largest mining convention, features technical sessions and prominent guest speakers. The Coal and Oil Sands Division is an active participant in this convention by arranging technical centered sessions around the theme of the convention.
Coal Operators Conference
Every two years, a conference is held in a coal mining community. The conference focuses on all aspects of operating coal properties and mines.
Awards
Awards are presented annually to worthy candidates for student essay, coal award, distinguished lecturer and fellowships. In addition, the Coal and Oil Sands Division sponsors a biannual research grant.
The Coal and Oil Sands Division has a diverse group of members from across Canada representing all aspects of the coal industry from education to actual mining. There are four types of CIM membership available to all interested persons.
Members
Persons wishing to become regular members of the CIM must be upstanding individuals with at least five years experience in the minerals, metallurgical, or petroleum industry. A bachelor's degree or completion of an equivalent level program reduces the experience required by two years.
Associate Members
Persons of integrity with interest in the mining, metallurgy or petroleum industry, as well as new graduates (or any persons) who do not have sufficient experience to qualify as Members.
Corporate Members
CIM admits as a corporate member any legal entity or private enterprise operating in the mining, metallurgy or petroleum sector, or their suppliers.
Student Members
Persons wishing to be admitted as student members must be enrolled in an university, college, technical or technological institution and be following courses normally leading to a career in the mining, metallurgy or petroleum industry.When you join the CIM you should indicate your interest in the Coal and Oil Sands Division and you will automatically become a member.
