Guidelines for Authors of Technical Papers
All submissions must fully comply with the below guidelines. All those that do not will be returned to the authors.
CIM publishes peer-reviewed technical papers in English and French on various aspects of the minerals industry from the exploration to production stage. Extended versions of papers presented at the Institute's technical meetings (i.e., the CIM Conference and Exhibition) are solicited for publication. The Institute also encourages the submission of papers from its general readership.
Complete technical papers are published in the CIM Bulletin online, as well as in the annual transactions volume. A one-page executive summary of the paper is also published in CIM Magazine.
Copyright
Copyright and first publication rights for all papers and other materials presented at CIM meetings (annual, district, society, or branch) and/or published by CIM are strictly reserved by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.
It is the authors' responsibility to obtain any approval/clearance from their company prior to submitting a paper for review. Copyright permission is also necessary prior to submission if an earlier version of a paper was published elsewhere. CIM does not publish papers that were published in or submitted to another journal.
Submission and Review Procedure
Electronic copies of the completed manuscript and executive summary should be uploaded to the CIM Bulletin Peer-Review Management System at www.cim.org. Both will be forwarded to the Chairman of the Bulletin Editorial Review Committee of the appropriate Society. The Chairman will have the manuscript critically read by a minimum of two reviewers who will recommend acceptance or rejection, based on its technical content and clarity of presentation.
In submitting manuscripts for review, authors agree to accept, as final, the Review Committee's decision regarding publication of the submitted manuscript.
Language
Authors are required to use proper English/French grammar and terminology. CIM does not offer rewriting services. Manuscripts that are not well written will be returned to the authors.
Timeline
The review procedure takes approximately four months. Because CIM relies solely on volunteers to review technical papers, at times, this leads to delays in the review process. CIM greatly appreciates authors' understanding and cooperation.
Authors who are required to revise their paper must provide it within four months (deadline to be included in correspondence). If they should fail to do so, the file on the paper will be closed on the day following the deadline. Should a revised version be received after the deadline, it will be treated as a new submission.
Title Page
The first page of the manuscript must contain only the title, authors' names, positions, company affiliations, keywords, and the date of writing or presentation. The complete coordinates, including telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail addresses of all authors should be included for future communication regarding revisions to the manuscript.
Abstract and Executive Summary (Extended Abstract)
The manuscript should be accompanied by a 100 to 200 word abstract and a 650-word executive summary (extended abstract), both presenting a concise summary of the main text of the paper as well as its purpose and main conclusions. The executive summary may be accompanied by one figure or table, which must be embedded in the text.
Text
The manuscript must be in Microsoft Word and should not exceed 8,000 words (double spaced), including abstract and references. Metric units of measurement accompanied by proper abbreviations should be used (refer to Metric Practice Guide for the Canadian Mining and Metallurgical Industries, published by the Mining Association of Canada, in cooperation with the Coal Association of Canada). Authors must submit their paper by e-mail or on diskette or CD-ROM, along with photos and illustrations.
Headings and Style Sheets
The headings and sub-headings should be clearly indicated, and be left justified (as opposed to centered on the page) and in title case (initial letters capitalized). Also, the manuscript should be sent unformatted.
Tables should be included within the main file, but at the end. If they exist in a spreadsheet program, they must be in Microsoft Excel.
Photos and Illustrations (Figures) Submitted Digitally
Illustrations must be embedded in the text. However, in the event that the paper is approved, illustrations will be required as TIFF, JPG, or EPS file formats, at the highest resolution possible (up to 1200 d.p.i. for line art; 300 d.p.i. for halftones). In cases where the conversion is impossible, a high-quality reproduction must be submitted for scanning purposes.
References
Cited in text
A. For one work by one author, use 'author-date' method. For example:
- Smith (2006) compared reaction times…
- In a recent study of reaction times (Smith, 2000)…
- Anonymous (2006) compared reaction times…
- In a recent study of reaction times (Anonymous, 2006)…
B. For one work by multiple authors:
- If a work has two authors, cite both surnames
- If a work has three to five authors, cite all authors the first time and in subsequent citations, include only the first author followed by 'et al.' For example:
o Smith, Jones, and Brown (2006) compared reaction times…
o Smith et al. (2006) compared reaction times…
- If a work has six or more authors, cite only the first author followed by 'et al.' for the first and subsequent citations.
C. For two or more works within the same parentheses, arrange in alphabetical order and separate with semicolons.
D. Within a paragraph, cite authors with date the first time the reference occurs; in subsequent citations, include only the name of the author.
Reference list
References should be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the text according to APA style, as shown by the examples below:
A. One-author or two-author entries by the same authors must be arranged chronologically. For example:

- Smith, A.B. (2006)
OR
- Smith, A.B. & Jones, C.D. (2005)
- Smith, A.B. & Jones, C.D. (2006)
B. One-author entries precede multiple-author entries with the same surname. For example:
- Smith, A.B. (2006)
- Smith, A.B. & Jones, C.D. (2000)
C. Multiple-author entries with the same first author and different second or third authors are arranged alphabetically by the second author. However, if the second author is the same, arrange by the third author. For example:
- Smith, A.B., Brown, E.F., & Jones, C.D. (2006)
- Smith, A.B. & Jones, C.D. (2002)
OR
- Smith, A.B., Brown, E.F., & Jones, C.D. (2006)
Smith, A.B., Brown, E.F., & Pope, G.H. (2006)
