Metal Mining Society

About Us

The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum (CIM), founded in 1898, is the leading technical society of professionals associated with the Canadian mineral industry. The members of CIM come from industry, government and academia, all dedicated to the discovery, production, utilization and economics of minerals, metals, and petroleum in an environmentally responsible manner.

On April 22, 1946, the council of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum formally approved the unanimous recommendation of metal mining members, authorizing formation of the Metal Mining Division.

The driving force behind formation of the new Division was Professor Leigh W. Bladon. He was affectionately dubbed "father" of the division. Mr Harry L. Roscoe, Vice-President and General Manager of Noranda Mines was the first Chairman of the Division. Mr. Ralph D. Parker, General Superintendent of International Nickel Company of Canada served as the first Vice-President.

The Division was established to serve the needs of a growing membership of underground and open pit mine operations and technical personnel within CIM. The Metal Mining Division is now one of six societies and five division making up CIM.

Mandate

The Metal Mining Division exists to Assist and Promote the Continued Growth of Mining in Canada By:

  • Promoting and facilitating the exchange of information and data on all subjects related to the Mining industry.
  • Educating the public on the many aspects of the Mining industry.
  • Promoting Mining as a positive, growing and dynamic industry with many exciting opportunities.

Structure

The Metal Mining Division consists of three primary groups: Executive Committee, Members at Large, and General Members.

The Executive Committee consists of five people elected annually by the general membership at the Annual Meeting: Chairman, Vice Chairman, Past Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer.

The Executive Committee is responsible for the financial and business affairs of the Division to ensure that the objectives of the Division Mandate are met. The Executive Committee annually nominates General Members for the Metal Mining Division Awards Committee and to participate as liaison with various CIM Committees.

Members-at-Large are a group of approximately ten General Members, appointed by the Executive Committee to provide advice and assistance to the Executive Committee.

General Members are CIM members who have designated membership in the Metal Mining Division as part of their membership in the overall body.
