October 25-26, 2010 | Alumni Hall / Fraser Foyer
Laurentian University - Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

Discover the importance of the mining industry in your everyday life! Let us introduce you to the present and future mining professions and opportunities.

The Mining in Society show is the perfect venue to discover the importance of mining to our society and its impact on our daily lives. It is a FREE event open to the public, which will showcase the many careers that are available directly, and indirectly, in the mining industry. Did you know that mining companies hire people from diverse professions like: nursing, security professionals, engineers, computer specialists, plumbers, electricians, heavy equipment operators, explosion specialists and lots more?

MIS will also serve to increase public awareness of the mining industry and all that it contributes to society. MIS will be comprised of pavilions showcasing the main areas of mining: Exploration, Mining / Processing, Sustainability, Products / Fabrication, Education, New Frontiers and Health Safety.

In other words, it will allow participants to ‘’walk’’ through the mining life cycle. Each section will provide real-life demonstrations of each step of the mining process starting with a mountain of rock and ending with your mountain bike supported by the extracted minerals. It will be interactive, hands-on and exciting.

The mining industry has so much to offer everyone. Within the next decade, there will be more than 65,000 jobs to be filled in Canada. From a young age, students must be informed O the opportunities for employment in our industry. Bring your class to this unique event and help broaden their horizons.

Onsite, students will have the opportunity to:

  • Explore the importance of mining in everyday life
  • Participate in the “Amazing Mine Challenge”
  • Discover the exciting career opportunities the industry has to offer

The interactive, hands-on format is both educational and enjoyable and ideally suited to accommodate whole classes. Everyone should attend: intermediate, secondary, and post-secondary students, teachers, as well as the general public.

You will go back to school with a comprehensive image of the mining industry and maybe your students will choose to be part of it in the near future.

Be sure to add this valuable event to your school calendar!

Here’s what teachers and students said about their experience at a MIS show:

"Wow, it's like the Olympics of mining. Thanks for including us this year. It was great!" — Frank Sabino, teacher, St. Lawrence School, Toronto, ON

"I enjoyed how everything was so organized and how neat it was. I did the saw dust and iron one. I learned that the magnet picks up the iron because they are both magnetic forces, so the iron sticks to the magnet. I also went to the rock testing station; that was amazing. I learned so much. Thank you!" — Jessica (student)

"The event was wonderful. The student activities were great." — Joanne Le Prevost-Groves, Geography Department Head, St. Francis Xavier C.S.S., Mississauga, ON

MAKE IT A 2 IN 1 FIELD TRIP

Enhance the MIS experience with a visit to Dynamic Earth of the Earth Science Centre. An underground tour will allow your group to see what a real hard rock environment feels like. Students will also learn about surface processes and mining practices around the world through multimedia presentations and a live show.

The 75-minute Dynamic Earth experience includes themed activated such as Ground Rules, Marvelous Minerals, Rocks to Riches and Nickel City Stories. Read all about it at www.dynamicearth.ca.

Fees for groups combining Dynamic Earth to their visit at the MIS show are covered by the MEMO Sudbury Committee of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. Limited capacity for the combined activity.
