CIM Montreal 2011
Abstract Agnico-Eagle’s Pinos Altos mine is located in the mountainous Sierra Madre gold and silver belt of northern Mexico. It is located in the western part of the State of Chihuahua, 280 km from the capital. Agnico-Eagle Mines ltd completed a successful feasibility study in 2007, began construction in 2008 and reached commercial production in November of 2009. Production of approximately 165,000 ounces per year is achieved from a mixture of open pit and underground ore. This paper discusses the challenges involved with mining the Pinos Altos deposits along with the opportunities afforded to both the company and the community in this isolated region of the Sierra Madre mountains.
