Cote Blanche Salt Mine _ New Shaft and Hoisting Facility

CIM Vancouver 2002
Norris Hebert,
Abstract IMC Salt have recently completed the installation of a new shaft and hoisting system at their Cote Blance facilty on an island in the Gulf of Mexico near Lydia, Louisiana. The concrete lined shaft which was sunk through 650 ft of frozen overburden presented numerous challenges because of the high water content of the soil and high ambient temperatures. The facility includes surface fan providing 550,000 cfm at 5.5 in WG,a steel clad heaframe which acts as a pressure bulkhead and a ground mounted koepe hoist which raises 17 ton skips at 2000 fpm on rope guides in a 16 ft diameter shaft.
