CIM appoints Michael Winship as president elect for 2015

CIM is pleased to announce the nomination of Michael D. Winship, P.Eng., as CIM president elect for 2015. He will take on the presidency for the period 2016–17. A veteran of the minerals industry, Michael’s experience in the local and global markets is extensive. He has played critical roles in the development, operations and corporate business of over 25 mines in diverse working jurisdictions including Northern Canada and the Sudbury Basin for more than 35 years.

Since 2011, he has been a director of Rubicon Minerals Corp. Michael was the president and CEO of Orvana Minerals Corp. until his retirement in March 2015, and he was COO of Quadra FNX Mining Ltd. (2010–12) prior to its acquisition by KGHM. He has held executive-level positions with HudBay Minerals, PT International Nickel Tbk and Vale Inco Limited. Before joining Vale Inco, Michael was the general manager for several major Placer Dome operations such as the Campbell and Dome mines. He started his career with Cominco Ltd. (now Teck). Michael holds a bachelor's degree in mining engineering from McGill University.

A member of CIM since the late 70s, Michael has been active in all the local branches and has served in executive roles for the Kimberley, Yellowknife, Vancouver and Red Lake branches. Further, he has been a regular speaker at CIM conferences and presented various talks at the CIM branches of Sudbury and Toronto in recent years. Michael has been leader of a number of mines that have won the CIM Ryan Safety Award. In 1985 Michael was awarded the CIM Metal Mining Medal.

Michael was active in the OMA and MAC boards in the past and looks forward to supporting strong relationships with the various mining industry associations.
